Let the Sun Shine! Solar Energy System Installed!

If the sun is shining in Liberia right now, there is electricity being produced at Light of the World Academy. A bank of solar panels was installed on the roof of the school building while the control system and storage batteries were installed inside. It is a small 3kW system that will be enough to power lights, the well pump, and possibly a small refrigerator. The bulbs in the school are all LED technology and use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, which is a big reason that solar energy is practical. The efficient and professional crew from Pickering Energy Systems completed the entire installation in 3 days during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

You might be thinking why would solar panels be a priority? In this part of the world, there is no electric utility as we know it in the U.S. One can buy a portable generator, and if there is not a fuel shortage, and if one is able to withdraw funds from the bank, it might be possible to purchase fuel. Another option is to purchase electricity (at a VERY high rate) from someone else that has a portable generator. At one time Pastor Sylvester subscribed to electrical service in the “evening only” for the home where he and his family lives because “24 hour service” was just too expensive. In light of the circumstances in Liberia, solar energy does make practical sense.

The system is ready for the Second Semester that starts in January. Let the sun shine!
